Looking Forward To 2017

Posted on Sunday, January 1, 2017 by Laura Amiton

As I write this on the first day of 2017, I find myself excited for the year in front of TFS. I wish you could hear how motivated my team is to help our customers each and every day. The conversations and drive they have is very motivating to me. I find myself lucky. Because this isn’t just my dream, it’s our dream, to help people and their pets. We’ve gotten to know you and consider you family. So here’s to 2017-another opportunity to serve you, to get to know new people, and for us to find new ways to be creative and impress.happycat

Hug Your Babies

Anyone who has loved a pet knows what joy it is to have them in our lives. They bring boundless joy and love and we find ourselves naturally wanting to reciprocate all the joy and love back to them. And when we lose them, young or old, the hurt is real and the pain is intense. It never seems to ever go away entirely.

I learned last night that we lost one in my circle. Bailey, just six years old, ingested part of a toy that required intestinal surgery. Unfortunately, it was just too late for Bailey. Bailey and my dog were siblings so the loss cuts deep to me. We were family. Gone are the days of watching Bailey running playfully with my dog. Gone are the days of seeing his sweet smile upon being greeted at the door.

Hug your fur babies now and everyday as if it were your last together, for you never know.

Allergy Season

Posted on Friday, April 1, 2016 by Laura Amiton

PetAllergies

My dog Willa is now 5 years old. When she was about 7 months old, around this time of year, her eyes became red and runny and she seemed to itch constantly. Then, later as it turned to summer, she became so symptomatic that her muzzle began to swell. This, of course, scared me half to death!

I took her to emergency where she was diagnosed with a severe allergic reaction, perhaps from a bug bite or bee sting. This happened two more times over the next two years and I was quickly realizing that it was more likely environmental because it would happen only during spring and summer.

My vet and I decided to test her for environmental allergens-that’s when I learned that she was allergic to several plants that bloom in spring and summer. Three kinds of molds, pine needles and one type of grass ranked highest on her allergy test, in addition to many other common plants growing in our area.

First, we began a regime to help calm Willa’s immune system-naturally.

My vet created a serum specific for her that contained small amounts of the allergens she tested highest for. These were injected weekly and much like a vaccine, the tiny dose was to get her body to respond to the foreign invader, but on a smaller, safer scale. Even my vet told me that at best, this would lessen her symptoms about 80%.

Knowing that this was going to be just one of many approaches, I started using some products to help boost her immune system. My favorite product because I saw the best result was the Green Honey Allergy Support made locally by Snook’s Pet Products. Willa loved it and her symptoms by her 4th year were almost gone.

What I love about this product is that it makes sense. Local, raw honey contains pollens in tiny amounts, naturally. By feeding small amounts it forces the body to respond to the local pollens in a less aggressive way. It just works.

Here we are, beginning of April, and Willa’s doing quite well. But last night, noticed her eyes are a bit red and swollen once again, which tells me, that it’s time to bring out the Green Honey and get her through another allergy season, naturally.

Holiday Celebration

Posted on Friday, December 18, 2015 by Laura Amiton

We had our first holiday celebration last weekend and it super-exceeded any expectations I had. We had quite the crowd for Santa photos-in fact, it rivaled all the Santa photos events ever done at my other shop on Alberta Street over the past decade! Next year, I promise, we’ll do this more than once and with plenty of planning time. I heard from many the days following that they wished they could have made it. Next year, next year, next year!! Here’s to 2016!

Health & Happiness

Posted on Sunday, October 25, 2015 by Laura Amiton

Watching owners interact with their pets is something that brings me a lot of joy. It’s not hard to see the connection and bonds that are woven so strongly. I see this everywhere and every day in my store and it’s a main reason I am so encouraged to get to work and help people. It’s fun to hear the stories and view the photos being shared. I love to hear how they bring joy into your lives.

I believe that our pet’s health and happiness are directly linked to our health and happiness. Seeing our pets devour their food with joy, trot around the house looking for the next lap to sit on, or playfully seek out a toy, can give us something to focus on that is positive and good. We need lots of that in our lives!

Special Events at TFS

Posted on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 by Laura Amiton

August 29th marked our first adoption outreach event where we hosted CAT Adoption Team. Lots of people came in to interact with the adorable felines and one lucky kitten found his new home that day! In addition to the adoption outreach, we held a fundraiser for CAT Adoption Team. We raised $200 through our cat tree, food raffles and animal communication sessions. We look forward to future events with this amazing cat advocacy group!

Our next adoption outreach event will be with Deaf Dogs Of Oregon on Saturday, September 26th from 11am-2pm. Stay tuned for more details on this!

We are excited to announce a new monthly event: Birthday Pawday! Our first Birthday Pawday is Saturday, September 19th from 2-4pm. If you have a September birthday and/or your animal friend has a September birthday or adoption day, please make The Filling Station Pet Supplies a part of your special celebration! Stop in for complimentary treats for all, along with a birthday photo!

Our First Event: Cat Day!

Posted on Saturday, August 29, 2015 by Laura Amiton

Hello! While I’ve already met some of you, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Sindi Somers. I am the store manager of The Filling Station Pet Supplies. After eight years of living back in my birthplace of San Diego, I am excited to have returned to the Pacific Northwest. I spent the majority of my life in Western Washington. Memorial Day of this year marked the beginning of my life in Oregon. I am thrilled to be back amongst the green trees and cooler weather. Although I haven’t seen too much of the latter yet, I know it is just around the corner!

As store manager, I am excited to be involved in coordinating and facilitating on-site events. This Saturday marks our very first event, Cat Day, with free cat food and treat samples from open to close; 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

For Cat Day, we welcome the Sherwood-based animal shelter Cat Adoption Team (CAT) from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. CAT is bringing 3 to 5 kittens and all will be available for adoption from our store. We can’t wait to welcome CAT and their feline friends to The Filling Station Pet Supplies! Other activities include a raffle for a cat tree, and animal communication sessions. All proceeds will benefit the Cat Adoption Team. For more information about CAT, please check out their website http://catadoptionteam.org.

The kind and supportive Beaverton Valley Times included an article about our event in last week’s paper. The Day is Finally Here

Posted on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 by Laura Amiton

The day is finally here! I am so excited to open in Tigard. You see, I have been planning this store for over five years. The idea of creating a pet supply store with an attached drive-thru came to me when helping a customer at my other store, Healthy Pets Northwest in northeast Portland. My customer, a Mom, was desperate for her dogs’ food. The customer was frantic because she had a sleeping baby in the car and was trying, like all Mom’s, to do it all. I asked if I could do her shopping and bring her receipt to the car and what came from that interaction was a business idea.

I wanted to have a store that honored all the ways a pet owner might want to shop at a brick and mortar business. When it’s difficult to take the time to come in, we have the drive-thru. For more interaction, our interior space is friendly, warm and fun. Our desire is to listen to what pet owners are requesting and to offer thoughtful, knowledgeable interactions.

I’m really excited to get to know you! In addition, my team is exceptional. I feel very lucky.
